There is a huge amount of good in this world… All you have to do is take the time to notice it.

The problem is that we can so easily get wrapped up in our own problems, so we forget to take care of others. The reason for this is because our brains go into a state of self-preservation mode.

Now while this is hugely important; you can’t take care of other without first taking care of yourself. We just need to remember to look beyond ourselves every once in a while, and see the need of others as well as just ourselves.

 

What is a random act of kindness?

We all know about kindness and how important it is to actually be kind in our day to day lives.

But today I want to talk to you about the power of randomness.

This type of randomness has a new word, RAOK.

R = Random

A = Act

O = Of

K = Kindness

Not just kindness but a random act of kindness.

So let’s jump into what exactly a random act of kindness is.

For the remainder of this article I will referencing a random act of kindness as ROAK.

A RAOK is simply being kind, randomly.

That is all there is to it!

Being kind is so inherently good for you and being kind is something that you can do everyday that will cleanse your soul and move your energy into a field of positivity.

One RAOK a day can:

– Make us happier.

– Give us healthier hearts

– Slow down the effects of ageing

– Increase the quality of your relationships

– Be passed around hundreds of times in one day

 

A ROAK can’t be something you planned or have been thinking about doing. It can’t be something that you have had on your mind for a while and now you go and do it. It has to be completely random and unplanned.

What this does is train your mind to naturally be more kind and giving. It moves you away from thinkingabout being kind and into the mindset of naturally being a kind person.

 

What does a ROAK look like?

Maybe you’ve thought about this type of kindness before, but didn’t know exactly what you you could do.

Let’s have a look at some awesome acts that you can put into practise:

– Compliment your waiter/waitress.

– Put some change in a parking meter.

– Leave some change in a vending machine

– Give your seat to an elderly person.

– Buy a coffee for the person behind you.

There are so many ways you can practise kindness in a completely random way!

It is truly a win/win/win situation. The person you are being kind to benefits through your help. You feel good for having helped someone. And the world is a better place through your kindness.

You can’t have ‘humankind’ without ‘kind’, after all.

 

So why is this so important?

The person who you affect with your random gesture will undoubtably be incredibly surprised at your act and that will stay with them.

What is so incredible about this is that for every person you do one kind thing to, they will pass that back on to someone else. Your idea may inspire them to do something random for another stranger, and then that person to another person. What is left is an amazing spiral effect of kindness.

If a RAOK can have a positive impact on one person and that person has an impact on one other person, we can edge our world towards a more positive one and we can move towards a kinder nation because kindness, like laughter is contagious!

We as humans are inherently good, we are naturally positive and naturally kind, through social conditioning we have forgotten the importance of being kind.

We have all heard the expression, “don’t speak to strangers”. This in my opinion is incredibly sad, think of every person in your life other than your family that you currently know.

Every single one of them was a stranger to you at one point.

 

Random acts of kindness can be shown through thoughtfulness about the needs of others. How many times do you wish someone could have been more thoughtful before they did or said something? Try to be an example of this for others to follow.

When everyone around you is gossiping about someone, be the one to butt in with something nice to say about that person.

When you’re stuck in traffic and the last thing you want to do is let a car get in front of you, just remember that somebody else had to let you in, and repay the favour to the next person!

 

What are the real benefits of kindness?

On a spiritual level, when we do something kind for someone else we feel that it is simply the right thing to do. The connection we share for others inside yearns to help others.

Simply put it makes us feel good!

But why does it actually feel good?

On a biochemical level, it has been proved that these ‘good feelings’ are due to the increased levels of dopamine in the brain. This gives us a natural high, which is also known as ‘Helper’s High’

 

So, why should we practise RAOK?

Being kind is scientifically proven to be good for your overall health.

From an economical point of view, it’s entirely free.

From a practical point of view, it’s easy.

And from a social point of view, it improves the world.

But the real reason, of course, is that kindness is the key to deep lasting happiness.
